Dirleton is a genteel hamlet two miles east of Gullane in East Lothian with a village green and a romantic 13th-century ruined castle. Built on a natural rocky outcrop are the complex and fantastic remains of Dirleton castle. Originally late 13th century in date the castle was built in approximately three phases and it served as the residence of three noble families – the de Vauxes, Haliburtons and Ruthvens. The subsequent downfall of the Ruthvens saw the castle abandoned as a noble residence.
